How Long Does It Take to Publish a Book

One of the most common questions we get from indie authors is some version of: how long is this actually going to take?

The honest answer is longer than most people expect. And the authors who know that going in are almost always the ones who end up with the strongest launches.

Here’s a realistic timeline for publishing a book as an indie author.

THE SHORT ANSWER

From a completed first draft to a published book, most indie authors should expect to spend six months to a year in the publishing process. Sometimes more, rarely less, and almost never as fast as you originally hoped.

That timeline assumes you’re doing this properly, with professional editing, a quality cover, and a real launch strategy. If you rush, you can certainly publish faster. But the books that launch well are almost always the ones that gave the process the time it needed.

BREAKING DOWN THE TIMELINE

Developmental editing: 4 to 12 weeks

Once you submit your manuscript, your developmental editor needs time to read it thoroughly and compile their feedback. Most developmental editors have a turnaround time of four to eight weeks. After you receive your editorial letter, plan for two to four weeks of revision work on your end, sometimes more depending on the scope of the changes.

Line editing and copyediting: 2 to 6 weeks each

After your developmental revisions are complete, line editing is the next pass. Turnaround times vary by editor and by the length and condition of your manuscript, but two to four weeks is typical. Copyediting follows, with a similar timeline.

Proofreading: 1 to 3 weeks

Proofreading is the fastest editorial pass because it assumes the manuscript is in its final form. Most proofreaders can turn around a full-length manuscript in one to three weeks.

Cover design: 2 to 8 weeks

A quality book cover takes time. If you’re working with a professional designer, expect the process to take four to eight weeks from initial brief to final files, including revision rounds. Don’t leave this until the last minute.

Formatting: 1 to 2 weeks

Interior formatting for both ebook and print takes time, especially if your book has any special formatting requirements. Budget one to two weeks for this step.

ARC campaign: 8 to 12 weeks before launch

Your ARC campaign needs to start months before your publication date, not weeks. Recruiting readers, distributing early copies, and giving people enough time to read and review takes time you cannot compress at the last minute.

Launch planning and marketing setup: ongoing

Your author platform, newsletter, social media presence, and launch strategy should ideally be building for six to twelve months before your publication date. This isn’t a last-minute task. It’s a long game.

THE TIMELINE THAT ACTUALLY WORKS

If you’re starting with a completed first draft today, here’s a realistic roadmap:

Month 1 to 2: Developmental editing and revision

Month 2 to 4: Line editing, copyediting, and revision

Month 4 to 5: Proofreading and formatting

Month 3 to 6: Cover design running parallel to editorial work

Month 1 through 6: ARC campaign building, platform building, launch strategy

Month 6 and beyond: Launch

That’s a six-month minimum, assuming everything moves quickly and there are no delays. A nine-to-twelve month timeline is more realistic for most authors and results in a much stronger launch.

WHY RUSHING ALMOST ALWAYS BACKFIRES

The pressure to publish quickly is real. Especially in the indie space, where there’s a persistent myth that faster is better. It isn’t.

Readers notice when a book hasn’t been properly edited. Reviews reflect it. Word of mouth reflects it. And it’s very hard to undo a bad launch or a reputation for releasing books before they’re ready.

The authors who build sustainable careers in indie publishing are almost always the ones who took the time to do it right. The extra months you spend in the process are not delays. They’re investments.
